Body Burn Week Two: Habit Vs. Willpower

Hey there Body Burn rockstars!!!

Just a quick note to check in on all of you as we brave our second week of Egan’s Fit Body Bootcamp 4 Week Body Burn Challenge. We are half-way through week two and I know that this week can be hard. After the thrill of the initial kickoff wears off, we might begin to feel like we’re in an uphill race…we’re not even half-way there and “real-life” has set in again with work commitments, weddings, parties, Mardi Gras, who knows what else…but this is where we push through and remind ourselves that we have committed to 4 weeks of developing NEW healthy habits that are going to create lasting change in our lives.

You see, the secret to reaching our goals is not relying on sheer willpower to get us through our lives. Research shows that replacing undesirable habits with healthy ones creates longer lasting and better results than relying solely on willpower to reach our goals. Here’s why: Habits are not the enemy! Habits help us navigate the world without going crazy. Think of it as an evolutionary blessing that every decision we make in a day doesn’t have to be reevaluated and renegotiated in our brains! OMG, can you imagine how exhausting it would be (Should I get up? Which side of the bed? Should I have breakfast? What should I eat? Where should I eat it? Should I brush my teeth? With what?). The only issue is that sometimes we develop habits that don’t serve our bodies well and until we find new ones to replace them, those are our default.

We often try to break these “bad” habits by using WILLPOWER, but when we are tired, overworked, or under stress in anyway, our brains want the comfort of that habit so that it can conserve brain power to deal with the rest of everything else you’ve got going on. That’s the benefit of a challenge like Body Burn. It helps us to develop new habits that are healthier to fall back on when we can’t or don’t want to think so hard. We all got stuff going on, so relying on only willpower to reach your goals will give you short term benefit, but rarely long term results. Having healthy habits, on the other hand, will give you short term benefit AND long term results!

We’ve all heard that it takes 21 days to create a habit, so keep on experimenting and enjoying the Body Burn experience, and focus on the healthy new habits you are developing rather than beating yourself up for not having the WILLPOWER to be perfect, since willpower is really overrated and frankly, not that fun at all. Think of it this way:

Healthy Habits = LOVE for yourself

Willpower = FEAR of yourself

Which feels better for you?! Believe in your ability to replace old habits with new ones and have fun while doing it. Visualize what you want your “default settings” to look like and create a set of habits that allow you to go on autopilot once in a while without sacrificing your wellness.

Happy December, Bootcampers! What are your Goals?!

And…we’re back!

Happy Holidays Bootcampers! Bootcamper Brian, of the amazing blog www.beautifullysimple.net, has inspired me to resurrect my Camp Kimi blog to inspire y’all to stay fit, healthy, happy  throughout the holiday season! Notice I’ve even upgraded to a REAL domain name, http://www.campkimi.com, not just a wordpress-hosted blog. We’re moving on up, baby! I’ve heard from a bunch of you Bootcampers (thank you, blog fans!) that you’d like to read about tips on nutrition, recipes, inspiring book recommendations, and how to stay fit through the holidays! That I can do!!! If there are other questions you have or things you’d like me to write about, please post them in the comment section!

OK, so, here we are. It is December 1st. Time to set some goals! I love the first day of the month. Pretty much every month I create a new set of goals. I like to write them down so I can look back on them throughout the month. I also like to share them so that I can be held accountable. The first of every month is like a fresh start! In fact, every MOMENT can be a new start! All it takes is slowing down for a few minutes to think about what you want and how you are going to achieve it.

So do it! Right now! Take out a piece of paper, your journal, or your computer and write down the goals you want to accomplish this month. They can be big, they can be small. But remember the goal setting rule – make them S.M.A.R.T. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.

Here are my goals for December:

  1. Resurrect my blog! My Sister From Another Mister (SFAM) Alice Inoue tells us that “Mercury Retrograde” is a great time to do all those “re” activities – reflect, recharge, recommit, etc. so I’m “re”-surrecting my blog since we are in MR until December 13th. Want to find out more about MR – check out Alice’s awesome Mercury Retrograde Article and while you are at, check out her inspiring blog. I just LOVE my SFAM to pieces!!! XOXO
  2. Workout Six Days a Week! My dear friend Fortuna is my accountability partner for this one! Yay Fortuna!!! She is my hero! If you haven’t read it yet, check out the post I wrote about this talented Bootcamper. Rumor has it we’re rewarding ourselves with an adventure to a Korean Spa if we hit our goal…
  3. Vegan Month #2. My goal last month was to switch from vegetarian to vegan. I feel so happy and wonderful that I’m committing to continuing for at least another month. I love eating vegan. I love that I am being kind to my body, animals, and the planet. It feels good to me. I had this realization recently that there are times that I eat animal products just to make it easier for other people. Sometimes that’s what feels right to me, but lately I have really been enjoying eating the way I WANT TO, even if it means being a pain in the ass.I know this isn’t for everyone, but for those of you interested, I’ll be sharing some vegan recipes here. For those of you wondering about veganism or thinking that I must not be getting enough protein to survive, check out these resources about thriving without animal products in your diet.

    Remember it is all about listening to your own body and inner wisdom to figure out what foods make your body sing (Hint: It’s probably NOT a bacon double cheeseburger with Red Bull and vodka). HIGH VIBRATION FOODS mean HIGH VIBRATION BODY!

Inspiration Friday: My Amazing Bootcamp Ohana

Happy Aloha Friday, Everyone! I dedicate today’s Inspiration Friday post to My Super Awesome Bootcamp Ohana! It is hard for me to believe that I only met Egan Inoue one year ago. In fact, it is almost one year ago to the date. Last year at this time, I was taking Alice Inoue‘s Feng Shui Your Life course. It started on my birthday of last year, September 24, 2010. It was in this life-changing workshop that I met Egan. Alice brought Egan in as a guest speaker to talk to us about Physical well-being and Health. He had just started Egan’s Fit Body Bootcamp on September 1 and he invited our class to come and try it out.

I just pulled out my workbook from last year’s course and on September 25, 2010 I wrote, “Call Egan – Bootcamp Trial”. I started on October 1 and fell in love! Egan, Marcia, and Corrie were so fun, warm, welcoming, and inspiring and the workouts were kick ass!!! But what REALLY hooked me from the first day were the other Bootcampers. Egan’s Bootcamp is like a magnet for the coolest people in the world. I have met the most amazing, conscious, inspiring, HILARIOUS people over the past year. Seriously. Our Bootcampers are quirky, snarky, sassy, funny, fun, and just so darn FULL OF LIFE. This goes for our Trainers too, by the way. Over the past year, Egan’s Staff and Bootcamp Members have truly become my family. I am so grateful, I could cry!

Bootcamp came into my life at a time when I really needed it. And maybe that’s the way for it is for all of us who end up at Egan’s Bootcamp. I have gone through more life changes in this past year than most of you would probably ever guess. I really believe that it was Bootcamp and my strong system of support and friendship there that helped me weather the seas of transition and change without totally LOSING IT. Despite all the challenges and change going on in my life at the time, when Egan and Marcia asked me to become a trainer last year, I followed my heart and said yes…and thank God I did!

Being a Bootcamp Trainer has become a true passion for me. I LOVE getting up at 4:30 in the morning to teach my classes. I love seeing people drip with sweat. I love hearing them groan and complain and then thank me afterwards for a great workout. I love being able to yell at people in a socially appropriate context. I love seeing people’s bodies and lives transform. I love being able to help people reach their goals. I love laughing and sweating and dancing with my classes. I love seeing people taking care of themselves and giving themselves the gift of physical health and wellness. I love seeing my Bootcampers encourage each other and bond. I love the inside jokes we have. I love hearing everyone’s story. I love the camaraderie of shared muscle pain and endorphins. I love it all. We are a bonded, crazy, eclectic, wacky family that shares the values of self-development, personal growth, health, wellness, and friendship – and dammit, it is a beautiful thing.

Today in our 5:30am class, the gang surprised me with hilarious gifts, thoughtful goodies, and so much sincere kindness and love it brought tears to my eyes. I am overwhelmed by the love and appreciation that I feel for My Bootcamp Ohana. I am happier than I have ever been and there is no doubt in my mind that much of this has to do with this amazing family that has come into my life. Thank you Alice for introducing me to Egan. Thank you Egan, Marcia, and Corrie for all that you do and for letting me be a part of something so awesome. Thank you fellow trainers for your inspiration, support, and friendship.

And to our Bootcampers – I love you – thank you for inspiring me everyday. Being your trainer is the BEST JOB EVER! Now, drop and give me 36 burpees for my birthday! No make that 37 – one for good luck!

Tick Tock, Party People!

Here we are heading into our last week of Flat Belly Challenge. How are we feeling? Remember, it is not about how PERFECT you followed this program or any other – it is about getting in the habit of feeling good and making great choices for ourselves every day! Which tricks, tips, healthy eating or fitness habits are you going to keep? What feels so good that it will become a lifestyle? In my opinion, that’s the goal of any program like this. It is not about restricting yourself for 28 days so that you can go back to unhealthy choices once is it OVER. It is about resetting your body/mind and shifting your perspective so that you can see that YOU can control your choices and therefore YOUR EXPERIENCE each and every day. That is EMPOWERING.

If you are breathing, you are ALIVE and that means you have TIME ON THE CLOCK to take control of your life and create the experience you want to have on this planet. I want to share an amazing video with you on this very subject. I saw it on one of my absolute FAVORITE websites, FinerMinds.com, which is a one-stop shop for all things inspiring and awesome. Seriously, this Three Foot Giant will knock your socks off. His life-changing story will make you realize that no obstacle should stop you, or anyone else, from living life to the fullest. Sean teaches us that life is not worth whining about and instead of fretting about problems we’re actually much better off doing a boogie instead.

If you’ve not met this remarkable man, you’ll learn quickly that his heart is made of pure gold. Despite surviving over 200 fractured bones by the age of 18, Sean rocks his life to epic proportions and is working his way through an awesome bucket list (he’s already ticked off scuba diving and meeting the Dalai Lama).

Life is Crazy Beautiful…

This is what my life has looked like lately! Lunch and snacks at my desk! When life gets CRAZY it takes extra planning and preparation to stick to a healthy diet and a workout schedule. Whenever I find my life getting hectic I have a few tricks to help me feel “in control” and stay on track. Here are some simple things you can do to help you feel in control when life is CRAZY:

  • Get up 20 minutes earlier. Use the time to meditate, get organized, make your lunch, collect your thoughts, breathe, whatever. Just give yourself a little extra time. You can use it to do the next tip.
  • Make your bed. This is my mom’s trick and it is so simple and awesome. The couple of minutes it takes to make your bed can have a HUGE impact on how in control you feel of your day.
  • Take 5 minutes in the morning to free-write about your day ahead and what you want to accomplish.
  • Take 5 minutes to do gratitude journaling…start with “I am so grateful for…” This will help you to create positive energy and appreciation for your life and help keep things in perspective when things feel hectic.
  • Write your workouts in your calendar. Treat them like appointments with yourself. Know that exercising will give you more energy to handle everything going on in your life.
  • Have a good to-do list system. I use a program called OmniFocus and when things get really busy I use it to divide my lists by the days of the week. Rather than looking at my overwhelming list of everything I want to and have to do, I split my list up by the days of the week and just focus on what I need to get done that day. Prioritizing and setting reasonable expectations of what I will get done in a day helps me to feel less overwhelmed. Plus, being able to check off all my items for the day feels so good!
  • Pack lots of snacks and a healthy lunch. When your day is busy, you may tell yourself that picking something up on the road is easier, but it is actually more important than ever to pack healthy options so that when things get super busy at work or in your day, you at least can keep your blood sugar levels balanced and you won’t end up eating something from a vending machine or fast food out of desperation.
  • Bring a big bottle of water with you where ever you go. When we get busy, we forget to drink water which makes us tired, less efficient, and blah. Don’t let yourself get dehydrated! If you are thirsty – you are already dehydrated!
  • Find some time in your day to totally unplug and just “be”. Martha Beck wrote a great book called, “The Joy Diet” and the first thing she talks about people needing is, ironically, “nothing”. What most of us are hungry for, especially in this loud crazy busy world we live in is quiet, solitude, peace…NOTHING. So find 10 minutes to just sit alone in quiet. You’ll be amazed how this can recharge and center you.

Inspiration Friday: The Kitchen Goddess

Fortuna, The Kitchen Goddess, making cauliflower musubis at Nahewai

Happy Inspiration Friday! This is my dear friend, Kathleen “Fortuna” Arai, also known as The Kitchen Goddess. Fortuna has been cooking for us and making us laugh for as long as I can remember. She is a fabulous chef with amazing range who really can bake or cook ANYTHING you can imagine. As her life focus has evolved over the years, so has her cooking. These days, her conscious, loving spirit infuses every dish she makes with such high vibration energy that I swear eating her food is an intoxicating experience.

Fortuna is not only an amazing chef, she is a gifted healer, incredibly intuitive and insightful. She is also a fiery, sassy woman with a sharp wit, amazing sense of humor, and a fantastic laugh. Here is more about Fortuna:

Kathleen “Fortuna” Arai has been a Personal Chef in Honolulu for almost 17 years. Her specialty is healthy cooking to suit the needs and tastes of her clientele. She is currently in her third year at Sacred Path Healing School. Using food as a medium for health and healing is a perfect match for her interests. “Preparing healthy, delicious food is a passion. I love assisting others on their journey to health and wellness. Creating delicious dishes for those on restricted, limited or sensitive diets are an exciting challenge for me.” Fortuna is also passionate about teaching others how to cook and doing research for new product development.

“For non-vegetarians, substitute a turkey or beef burger. I made these for some friends that were not eating any grains in their diet. I accepted the challenge!”

Special equipment needed: musubi maker and food processor

6 Morning Star Farms vegetarian breakfast patties
1 packets stevia
1 Tablespoon Bragg’s liquid aminos

Spray skillet with cooking spray and turn burner on to “medium”. When skillet is warm, add patties and lightly brown on both sides. Once browned, add Bragg’s and stevia and mix in pan. Remove patties and set aside.

Cauliflower “rice”

1 small cauliflower
juice from 1/2 lemon
1Tablespoon Bragg’s liquid aminos
1/2 Veganaise
6 half-sheets roasted Nori

Boil Caulflower until knife-tender. Let cool. Place in bowl of food processor. Add Bragg’s and lemon. Pulse until cauliflower resembles the size and shape of rice grains. Empty into mixing bowl. Add Veganaise and mix.

To assemble:

place nori sheet on clean, dry work surface
place musubi maker on top of nori sheet
measure 1/2 cup cauliflower mixture into musubi maker
place patty on top of “rice”
press mixture down with tamper
remove musubi maker and fold nori sheet over.
seal seam with a little water


“I’ve recently stopped eating a lot of sugar. But I still want a treat every so often. This fit the bill nicely! I’m not sure how many servings this makes because I could eat the whole pan!”

Preheat oven to 350 degrees


1 cup macadamia nuts, crushed
1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
3 Tabespoons flax seed meal
3 Tablespoons coconut flour
1/4-1/2 cup refined coconut oil
1/2 cup xylitol
3 packets stevia
1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix to a crumbly texture. Set aside.


4 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced small
1-2 Tablespoons pumpkin pie spice
1Tablespoon coconut flour
1/2- 1 cup xylitol
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 packets stevia
15 drops vanilla cream liquid stevia
3 Tablespoons Just Like Sugar

Mix filling ingredients. Pour into 9×12 glass pan sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle topping so that it covers the entire filling. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until topping is golden and filling is bubbly.
